Idealism in a Digital Age

03Mar10

I struggled with this story in yesterday’s Guardian on Apple’s internal audit into their manufacturer’s employment practices. If some people are closet Apple geeks, I am at the annual pride parade. Even my laptop has a name (no, internet, I am not sharing my Macbook’s Christian name, this is embarrassing enough).

Though not quite the goody two-shoes ethical shopper I strive to be, I still make a damn good crack at being a responsible consumer. Admittedly, I do grumble about the price of technology, but I know in my heart it is cheap – very cheap – and that there are no guarantees as to provenance.  How idealistic can we be in a digital age? What is ethical technology? How do we be responsible consumers in a digital age?
